Whitaker scores school record 47 points in Hornets' win

SALYERSVILLE - Senior guard Brady Whitaker poured in a school record 47 points to lead Magoffin County over Belfry 71-44 in the semifinals of the 15th Region 2A Boys' Basketball Tournament on Friday night. 

With the win, tournament host Magoffin County advanced to the 15th Region 2A boys' basketball title game. 

The Hornets broke open a close after after intermission. Magofifn County and Belfry were tied 12-12 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Hornets outscored Belfry 13-8 in the second quarter to lead 25-20 at halftime. Then, in one of its best single quarter performances thus far in the 2018-19 season, Magoffin County outscored Belfry 23-5 in the third period to take a commanding 48-25 lead into the final frame.

Magoffin County shot 56.8 percent (25-of-44) from the field in the impressive victory. The Hornets were 7-of-8 (38.9 percent) from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free throw line.

Each team 15th Region boys' basketball team claimed 29 rebounds. 

Chandler Lykins accompanied Whitaker in double figures for the Hornets, scoring 15 points. Lykins recorded a double-double, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. 

Aden Barnett and Isaiah Salyer rounded out the Magoffin County individual scoring, chipping in six points and three points, respectively. 

Belfry shot only 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the field. The Pirates were 3-of-18 from 3-point range. 

Belfry shot 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the free throw line. 

Jason Thompson paced Belfry with nine points. Finishing directly behind Thompson in the Belfry scoring column, Bret Coleman netted eight points. 

Justin Barker led Belfry on the backboards, pulling down 10 rebounds.

Magoffin County moved on to meet Lawrence County in the 15th Region 2A boys' basketball title game.
