SALYERSVILLE – The Independent was made aware of an alleged altercation that occurred at North Magoffin Elementary on Friday, April 5.

Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Scott Helton issued the below statement to the Independent and Mortimer Media Group on Monday, April 8:

I have been advised of a dispute/altercation that occurred at North Magoffin Elementary between two Magoffin County Board of Education employees on April 5, 2019.  No children were involved in this incident and no child or student observed or participated in the incident in any manner whatsoever.

We are investigating the incident and circumstances surrounding the alleged event.  The situation and/or employee action/discipline will be handled accordingly by the appropriate authority.

I personally want to assure everyone that the safety of our students is of the upmost importance to me.  I want to reassure that our schools are and will continue to be a safe environment for all.

While Mortimer Media Group received the statement several days ago, our office was waiting to see if charges would be filed before releasing the statement.

As of Wednesday, April 10, Helton has confirmed that Jackie Howard has been suspended since the alleged incident. Howard, a teacher at South Magoffin Elementary, is accused of going to North Magoffin Elementary and assaulting another teacher. According to court records, she is facing charges of third-degree assault (of a school employee) and second-degree terroristic threatening, both Class D felonies. A court summons has reportedly been issued, though no court date is on the docket at this time.

Jackie Howard is the widow of former North Magoffin Elementary Assistant Principal Russel Howard, who passed away in January.
