Tech center looking at Industrial Park

SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County Fiscal Court met in special session on Tuesday, February 20, discussing the lease agreement with the South Magoffin Community Activists and the possible location of a trade school in Magoffin County.

The fiscal court approved the sheriff’s 2021-2022 tax settlement of Oil and Gas, with Treasurer Josie Bailey saying they had to collect two years at a time, but the settlement was within a few cents of being perfect, so everything came out good.

They also approved the sheriff’s fourth quarter financial report of 2023, with Bailey also explaining nothing out of the ordinary showed up in the report.

The court agreed to amend certain items in the South Magoffin Community Activists, spelling out their responsibilities and that the county will keep insurance on the property, no political signs allowed at the site (except during events, but immediately taken down afterwards), etc., with Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman explaining that the South Magoffin Community Activists are in agreement with the amendments, as well. He said they have several grant applications in the works for that community center and some proposals for the playground and other options they’re looking at, so they hope to see some projects starting at the old John T. Arnett Elementary location.

The fiscal court also approved the updated county road list.

Judge Wireman said he has been in talks with a group considering building a tech school at the Magoffin County Industrial Park. He said it would be a tech center with post-secondary programs for carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, etc., and could serve as many as 400 students with eight-week terms for certifications recognized nationwide. He said they are in the process of getting grants and like the location.

He said they’ve also been in talks with a group that would build a place to make prefab homes, and they have first dibs on five acres at the industrial park, and the tech center group wants 10 acres. He said they have 11 acres after the Ember Energy sale, but there are multiple acres in the floodplain that could possibly be used to increase the acreage for both companies’ needs if it comes to that.

“This is very promising to be able to build a training center there and maybe to have a facility there that builds homes, and people could walk out of class and go over there to work,” Judge Wireman said. “That’s all possible, but we don’t know what will come of that, but we’re still continuing to work on getting something on the industrial park and help our economy and help our folks around here.”

Wireman also said with these possible industries coming to town, they want to work to having a hotel located to the county, as well.

The court also approved the January 16 meeting minutes, the bills, as well as the following fund transfers from the general fund: $37,000 to the jail fund, $10,000 to the solid waste fund.

The Magoffin County Fiscal Court is tentatively slated to meet March 19 at 4 p.m. in the Magoffin County Fiscal Courtroom of the Magoffin County Courthouse Albert Patrick Building.
