Summer food program offers free meals for kids

SALYERSVILLE – With school officially out, Magoffin County Schools will be starting their annual summer food program in June, offering meals for children in the community throughout their summer vacation.

Starting on June 10 and running through July 31, Magoffin County Schools will be participating in the summer food service program, providing meals to all children without charge on a first-come, first-serve basis, Monday through Friday at sites located throughout the community.

Rhonda Gullett with Magoffin County Schools Food Services told the Independent they fed 500 to 600 meals at each site last year, with three different base sites. This year they will be preparing the meals at one site, Salyersville Grade School, and sent out from there, using three buses to take the meals to different locations throughout the county.

The meals will be available for all children, with no discrimination and regardless of if they are Magoffin County students.

“We know a lot of kids go home and some are not fortunate enough to get everything they need,” Gullett said. “It’s a really great feeling knowing that we are taking care of our community and all kids should be able to get at least one free hot meal.”

Gullett said they are not just offering standard bag lunches.

“It will be one hot meal a day,” Gullett said. “We’re talking chicken, mashed potatoes – good food for the kids. We’re really trying to make it good and get the food to as many kids as possible.”
