Russell, Jordan among players due back for Lady Hornets


SALYERSVILLE - Starters one season ago, senior Tarah Russell and sophomore Makenna Jordan are among the players due back for the Magoffin County High School volleyball team in the 2020 season. 

As a junior during the 2019 high school volleyball season, Russell recorded 14 kills, 60 assists, 101 digs and 26 service aces. Russell led the Lady Hornets in assists during her junior campaign.

As a sophomore during the 2019 high school volleyball season, Jordan posted 13 kills, 102 digs and 16 service aces. 

Abby Hannah was among the players Magoffin County lost to graduation. During her senior season in 2019, Hannah registered 65 kills, 190 digs and 31 service aces. Hannah led the Lady Hornets in kills in 2019. Another player lost to graduation, Katie Howard logged 38 kills, 190 digs and 33 service aces for Magoffin County during the 2019 season.

Howard paced Magoffin County in both digs and service aces in 2019. 

Magoffin County will enter the 2020 high school volleyball season looking to return to the win column. The Lady Hornets ended the 2019 season 0-21. Magoffin County competes with longtime rivals Johnson Central, Martin County and Paintsville in the 57th District. Perennial title contender Paintsville shout out Magoffin County 3-0 in the 2019 57th District Volleyball Tournament Semifinals. 

The Lady Hornets are scheduled to open the 2020 season in August. Magoffin County's 2020 schedule include matches versus Johnson Central, Martin County, Paintsville, Lawrence County, June Buchanan, Jackson City, Prestonsburg, Estill County, Rowan County, Piarist School and Betsy Layne.
