Rejuvenated Hornets defeat Prestonsburg


SALYERSVILLE -  Magoffin County halted a three-game losing skid on Tuesday night, defeating visiting Prestonsburg 58-45 in anon-district boys' high school basketball game. 

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 12-13.

Prestonsburg dropped to 12-13 with the loss. 

Magoffin County edged Prestonsburg 13-12 in the opening quarter. However, Prestonsburg battled back to lead 18-17 at halftime.

But the Hornets regained control after intermission, outscoring Prestonsburg 14-4 in the third quarter. 

Magoffin County shot 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the field. The Hornets were 1-of-7 from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the free throw line. 

Brady Whitaker recorded a double-double to lead Magoffin County to the victory. Whitaker scored 18 point and pulled down 11 rebounds. 

Finishing directly behind Whitaker in the Magoffin County scoring column and recording a double-double of his own, Aden Barnett added 17 points and 10 rebounds. 

Narrowly missing double figures in scoring for the Hornets, Chandler Lykins netted nine points.

Randy Bailey added eight points for Magoffin County while Isaiah Salyer chipped in four points and Mason Lovely contributed two points. 

Magoffin County dealt Prestonsburg its second straight loss. 

The Hornets have regular-season games remaining versus Sheldon Clark (Feb. 8), East Ridge (Feb. 9), June Buchanan (Feb. 13) and Pike County Central (Feb. 15).
