SALYERSVILLE - Over 40 players were on the gridiron for Magoffin County at the start of the week, preparing for the Hornets' season opener later in the month.

"Practice has been going great," Magoffin County Coach Chris Gamble commented after his team finished another preseason session on Tuesday evening. "Our numbers are good. As of now, we have 41 players. We expect to have around 12 seniors. Our junior and sophomore classes are solid and we have a promising group of freshmen as well. We're excited heading into the season."

Fans won't have an opportunity to catch the Hornets during the preseason. Also, as a result of COVID-19, attendance will be limited for Magoffin County's home games during the upcoming season.

"Due to COVID-19, we won't be able to have a preseason event like Meet the Hornets," Gamble confided. "We'll possible do some type of inter-squad scrimmage with no fans in attendance between now and the first game of the season."

Magoffin County will feature multiple new starters during the 2020 high school football season. Multiple playmakers for the Hornets were lost to graduation.

Several Magoffin County players have been competing for positions during the shortened preseason.

The Hornets' 2020 schedule is made up of games versus Betsy Layne, Martin County, Belfry, Lawrence County, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County, Morgan County and Knott County Central.

Magofifn County is slated to host Betsy Layne in a season opener on Friday, Sept. 11. Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Betsy Layne football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
