Magoffin County loses state's leading tackler to transfer
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County linebacker Mason Lovely, who led the state in tackles as a junior in 2019, has transferred to Paintsville.
Lovely paced Magoffin County defensively throughout the 2019 high school football season, recording a state-leading 200 tackles in only nine games. Lovely posted 88 solo tackles, 14 tackles for losses and five sacks. In addition to his 200 tackles, Lovely recorded an interception.
Along with thriving defensively, Lovely delivered offensively for the Hornets in 2019. Lovely led the Hornets in receiving during the 2019 high school football season, hauling in 20 receptions for 187 yards.
Contributing on the ground, Lovely rushed 13 times for 88 yards and one touchdown.
Versatile, Lovely is a three-sport athlete. He excels in football, basketball and baseball.
Magoffin County and Paintsville aren't scheduled to meet during the 2020 high school football season. The Hornets and Tigers are 57th District rivals in basketball and baseball.
Paintsville finished runner-up to nemesis Pikeville in Class 1A during the 2019 high school football season. Pikeville blanked Paintsville 43-0 in the 2019 Class 1A title game. The Tigers ended the 2019 football season 11-4.
