Magoffin County finishes runner-up in 2A, Section 8 Tournament

BELFRY - Magoffin County fell short in a bid to capture a title as Lawrence County pulled away to win 86-79 in the Class 2A, Section 8 Tournament at Belfry High School on Friday. 

Connecting on over half of its attempts, Lawrence County shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63)  from the field. The Bulldogs were 8-for-18 from 3-point range.

Lawrence County shot 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the free throw line. 

Tyler Maynard, who is among the top boys' basketball players in the 15th Region, erupted for 41 points to lead Lawrence County to the title-clinching victory. Maynard was 13-of-19 from the field.

Cody Maynard added 18 points and Trenton Adkins contributed 10 points as the Bulldogs notched the win. 

The Hornets and Bulldogs, former 57th District foes, swapped leads throughout the tournament game. Magoffin County started strong, outscoring Lawrence County 18-15. But the Bulldogs used a 23-16 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 38-34 at halftime.

Adding to its lead shortly after intermission, Lawrence County outscored the Hornets 26-21 in the third quarter. 

Magoffin County shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the field. The Hornets were 6-of-18 from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the free throw line. 

The Hornets outrebounded the Bulldogs 34-26 in the setback. 

Isaiah Salyer led Magoffin County with 28 points. Salyer was 8-of-9 from the field. 

Accompanying Salyer in double figures in scoring for the Hornets, Aden Barnett added 22 points and Grayson Whitaker contributed 11 points. Barnett was 4-for-4 from the free throw line and narrowly missed recording a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds. 

Lucas Litteral (seven points), Randy Bailey (seven points), Caleb Wilson (two points) and Ryan Henderson (two points) combined to account for the rest of Magoffin County's individual scoring in the loss.
