Magoffin County falls to Shelby Valley


ROBINSON CREEK - Visiting Magoffin County fell behind early and couldn't recover from its slow start as Shelby Valley pulled away to win 72-33 in a non-district boys' high school basketball game on Thursday, Jan. 31.

With the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 11-12.

Shelby Valley improved to 21-4 with the win.

Junior Cody Potter led Shelby Valley to the victory, finishing with 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals. 

Shelby Valley featured three scorers in double figures. Orbie McPeek added 14 points for the Wildcats while Cameron Worrix contributed 12 points. 

Narrowly missing double figures in scoring for the Wildcats, John Flanery chipped in nine points.

Shelby Valley set the tone early, outscoring Magoffin County 19-7 in the opening quarter. In an even more dominant stretch, Shelby Valley outscored Magoffin County 21-8 in the second quarter to lead 40-15 at halftime. 

Shelby Valley added to its lead after intermission, outscoring Magoffin County 22-8 in the third quarter.

Aden Barnett led Magoffin County with a team-best 12 points. Barnett was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column.

Finishing one shot short of reaching double figures for the Hornets, Isaiah Salyer added eight points.

The other scorers for Magoffin County in the setback were Randy Bailey (six points), Mason Lovely (five points) and Chandler Lykins (five points). 

Shelby Valley remains the frontrunner in the 15th Region.
