Magoffin County falls to Phelps

Kennedy Williams lofted a shot for Magoffin County during its season opener at Floyd Central earlier in the month.

 

PHELPS - Visiting Magoffin County was limited to nine or less points in each quarter as 15th Region rival Phelps gradually pulled away to win 56-27 in a girls' high school basketball game on Thursday, Dec. 5.

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 0-2.

Phelps moved to 2-0 with the win.

After edging Magoffin County 10-9 in the opening quarter, Phelps outscored the Lady Hornets 19-9 in the second period to lead 29-18 at halftime.

Phelps added to its lead shortly after the intermission period, outscoring Magoffin County 19-5 in the third quarter.

Phelps won despite shooting only 27.5 percent (19-of-69) from the field. The Lady Hornets from Phelps were 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from 3-point range. 

Phelps finished 11-for-25 (44 percent) from the free throw line.

Danielle Prater netted a game-high 20 points to lead Phelps to the win. Phelps featured two scorers in double figures. Following Prater, Chloe Smith contributed 12 points for the Pike County squad.

Kacie Dotson, Alyssa Sargent and Kylie Hall rounded out Phelps' individual scoring, posting eight points apiece. 

Hall and Dotson led Phelps inside, securing 14 rebounds and 10 rebounds, respectively. 

Magoffin County shot only 23.9 percent (11-of-46) from the field in the loss. 

Haley Barnett led Magoffin County with a team-best 11 points. Barnett was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column

Macy Thacker (six points), Stephanie Helton (three points), Angel Mullis (three points), Shay Blanton (two points), Abby Bradley (one point) and Jaylen McCarty (one point) accounted for the rest of the Lady Hornets' scoring.
