Magoffin County drops season opener


IRVINE - Magoffin County was unable to prevail during its 2019 debut as host Estill County pulled away to win 5-0 in a high school baseball season opener on Monday.

Estill County outhit the Hornets 9-2 and committed only one error. 

The Engineers moved ahead early, pushing across one run in the bottom half of the second inning. 

Estill County pitcher Micah Adams notched the win. Adams allowed one hit and zero runs over five and a third innings, striking out 11. Another Estill County pitcher, Justin Rison, threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen for the Engineers.

Lucas Litteral started the game on the mound for the Hornets. Litteral allowed two hits and two runs over three innings, striking out one. Another pitcher, Kaden Bowling, threw three innings out of the bullpen for the Hornets.

Rison and Kamden Powell led the Estill County offensive effort, finishing with two hits apiece. 

Caleb Howard and Nick Caldwell provided one hit apiece for the Hornets in the shutout loss. 

Magoffin County committed two errors in the setback. 

The Hornets' 2019 schedule includes games versus Estill County, Floyd Central, Breathitt County, Shelby Valley, Russell, East Carter, Pike County Central, Knott County Central, Elliott County, Bath County, Morgan County, Phelps, Johnson Central, Paintsville, Rowan County, Betsy Layne, Sheldon Clark and Montgomery County.
