Lady Hornets falter in second half at Prestonsburg

PRESTONSBURG - Magoffin County pushed the host team throughout the first half but faltered after the intermission period as homestanding Prestonsburg pulled away to win 54-30 in an early-season girls' high school basketball game on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 0-4.
Prestonsburg evened its record to 2-2 with the win.
Host Prestonsburg gradually pulled away for the win after the break, distancing itself from Magoffin County following halftime. The Lady Blackcats won despite shooting 25.9 percent (15-of-58) from the field. Prestonsburg was 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from 3-point range. The Lady Blackcats shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the free throw line.
Alivia Slone scored a game-high 23 points to lead Prestonsburg to the win. Prestonsburg featured a pair of scorers in double figures as Alison Campbell added 12 points.
Finishing near a triple-double, Destiny Elliott added 7 points, 18 rebounds and 8 blocks for the Lady Blackcats.
Six different players dented the scoring column. Kylie Stephens chipped in seven points of her own while Faith Lazar scored three points and Alexis Skeens netted two points.
Magoffin County struggled offensively, shooting only 23.9 percent (11-of-46) from the field. The Lady Hornets were 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range.
Magoffin County shot 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the free throw line.
Macy Thacker scored 14 to points to lead the Lady Hornets. Thacker was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column.
Finishing near a double-double, Haley Barnett added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
The additional scorers for Magoffin County in the loss were Shay Blanton (three points), Stephanie Helton (two points) and Charla Lykins (two points).
