Lady Hornets fall to Phelps
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County remained in the loss column over the weekend as visiting Phelps, a longtime 15th Region rival, held on to win 53-46 in a non-district girls' high school basketball game on Saturday.
Phelps shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field. The Lady Hornets from Pike County were 7-of-21 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Phelps shot 80 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line.
Chole Smith paced Phelps with 16 points and eight rebounds. Three Phelps players reached double figures in the scoring column as Danielle Prater netted 13 points and Kacie Dotson tossed in 10 points.
Gabby McCoy and Alyssa Sargent rounded out the Phelps individual scoring, posting eight points and six points, respectively.
Magoffin County shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field. The Lady Hornets from Magoffin County were 0-for-9 from 3-point range.
Magoffin County shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free three throw line.
Thriving inside, Magoffin County outrebounded Phelps 39-24.
Haley Barnett led Magoffin County in scoring, netting a game-high 20 points.
Kennedi Stacy, who was ranked among the 15th Region's Top 10 girls' basketball players at the start of the current campaign, followed Barnett in the Magoffin County scoring column and recorded a double-double, posting 12 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.
Macy Thacker (six points), Kenlee Wireman (five points), Abby Brown (two points) and Morgan Damron (one point) were Magoffin County's other scorers in the setback.
