Lady Hornets fall to Floyd Central in region tournament


PIKEVILLE - Magoffin County was unable to pull off an upset in the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament. Floyd Central, the champion out of the 58th District, pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 58-35 in the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Thursday, Feb. 28.

With the win, Floyd Central improved to 28-2 and advanced to the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament Semifinals. 

Magoffin County ended its season 7-25 with the loss. 

Floyd Central moved ahead early, outscoring Magoffin County 19-9 in the opening quarter. The Lady Jaguars managed to double up the Lady Hornets in the opening half. Productive Floyd Central led Magoffin County 36-18 at halftime.

Floyd Central shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the field. The Lady Jaguars were 4-of-15 from 3-point range. 

Floyd Central shot 72.7 percent (8-o-11) from the free throw line. 

Holding an advantage inside, Floyd Central outrebounded Magoffin County 43-36.

Kaylee Moore led a balanced Floyd Central offensive effort, scoring a team-high 12 points. Katie Moore provided a double-double for the Lady Jaguars, scoring 11 points and dealing out 10 assists. Floyd Central featured three scorers in double figures as Abby Maggard added 11 points of her own in the  victory. 

Brook Stumbo narrowly missed reaching double figures for the Lady Jaguars, netting nine points. The other scorers for Floyd Central were Lauren Preston (five points), Grace Martin (five points), Kennedi Harvell (three points) and Kamryn Shannon (two points). 

Magoffin County shot 26.8 percent (11-of-41) from the field. The Lady Hornets were 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from the 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line. 

Senior guard Kennedi Stacy led Magoffin County with a game-high 22 points. Stacy was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column. 

The other scorers for Magoffin County were Haley Barnett (four points), Macy Thacker (four points), Kenlee Wireman (three points), Jaylen McCarty (one point) and Destiny Conley (one point)). 

In the other opening round games in the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament it was Johnson Central 48, Lawrence County 33; Shelby Valley 43, Belfry 35 and Pikeville 61, Pike County Central 49.
