Lady Hornets defeat Whitley County for first win


RACELAND - Magoffin County notched its first win in the 2019-20 girls' high school basketball season at Raceland High School on Sunday, Dec. 29, defeating Whitley County 58-53 in the Ryan Keaton eXP Realty Ohio River Classic.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 1-9. 

Whitley County dropped to 5-7 with the loss. 

Magoffin County played its best late in the matchup. Finishing strong, Magoffin County outscored Whitley County 23-12 in the fourth quarter to claim the victory. 

Whitley County suffered the setback after carrying a lead out of each of the first three quarters. A former 13th Region frontrunner, Whitley County led 27-23 at halftime. 

Haley Barnett scored 22 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Accompanying Barnett in double figures in scoring for the Lady Hornets, Angel Mullis netted 15 points.

Magoffin County shot 53.7 percent (22-of-41) from the field. The Lady Hornets shot 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from inside the arc. Magoffin County connected on 4-of-12 3-point field goal attempts in the winning effort.

The Lady Hornets, under the direction of head coach Justin Williams, shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free throw line. 

Stephanie Helton (eight points), Macy Thacker (six points), Shay Blanton (five points) and Katelyn Howard (three points) combined to account for the rest of Magoffin County's scoring in the triumph.
