Hornets top Pike County Central, 52-47


BELFRY - Magoffin County prevailed in the opening round of the 2A Sectional Tournament at Belfry High School on Friday (Jan. 3), topping 15th Region counterpart Pike County Central 52-47.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 6-4 and advanced in the 2A Sectional Tournament. 

The Hornets returned to the win column following a loss to Harvest Prep (Ohio) in the final round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic on Sunday, Dec. 29. 

Magoffin County dealt Pike County Central its fourth straight loss.

With the loss, Pike County Central dropped to 3-11.

Magoffin County shot 46.3 percent (19-of-41) from the field. The Hornets were 3-of-14 from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.

The Hornets overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Pike County Central. Finishing strong, Magoffin County outscored Pike County Central 27-15 in the second half. 

Aden Barnett scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Magoffin County to the victory. Barnett was 9-of-13 from the field. 

Isaiah Salyer and Randy Bailey accompanied Barnett in double figures in scoring for the Hornets. Salyer tossed in 14 points while Bailey added 12 points. 

Grayson Whitaker rounded out Magoffin County's individual scoring, chipping in four points for the Hornets. 

Magoffin County hosted the inaugural 2A Sectional Tournament in 2019.
