SALYERSVILLE - Following a productive preseason, Magoffin County is set to host non-district rival Knott County Central in a high school football season opener on Friday.
"As a team, we're looking forward to opening night Friday versus Knott County Central," said Magoffin County Coach Chris Gamble. "Traditionally, Knott County Central is a well-coached team with kids who play hard. We expect the same Friday. This week, we've prepared by watching film and working on our game plan. I'm excited to see how our players respond to our new coaching staff's schemes and adjustments. Everyone can expect a hard-hitting and intense Magoffin County Hornets football team."
Gamble took over as the head coach of the Hornets during the offseason. He replaced former head coach Justin Combs on the Magoffin County football sidelines.
Magoffin County ended the 2018 season 3-7. The Hornets notched wins over East Ridge, Betsy Layne and Knott County Central in 2018.
When the two high school football teams met in Hindman during the 2018 season, Magoffin County defeated Knott County Central 26-6.
Knott County Central concluded the 2018 season 2-8.
Both the Hornets and Patriots missed out on advancing to the 2018 KHSAA Class 3A Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.
Magoffin County is hoping to make a return to the postseason. The Hornets' 2019 gridiron journey starts when Knott County Central visits for the season opener.
"We're hoping to see our stands filled with Hornet fans ready to loudly cheer our kids on," added Gamble. "Please come and support us."
