Hornets lose four-point game to Letcher Central


WHITESBURG - Magoffin County suffered its second straight loss on the road earlier in the week. Host Letcher County Central held on to defeat the Hornets 56-52 in a non-district boys' high school basketball game on Monday night. 

With the loss, 15th Region member Magoffin County dropped to 11-11.

Letcher County Central, a team out of the neighboring 14th Region, improved to 12-8 with the win.

Magoffin County shot 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the field. The Hornets were 7-of-23 (30.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County finished 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

Isaiah Salyer led a balanced Magoffin County offensive effort, scoring 16 points. Mason Lovely accompanied Salyer in double figures for the Hornets, netting 11 points.

Grayson Whitaker chipped in eight points while Chandler Lykins added six points for visiting Magoffin County in the setback.

Ian Prewitt (four points), Aden Barnett (four points) and Ryan Henderson (three points) provided the rest of the Hornets' scoring. 

Magoffin County entered the week with regular-season games remaining versus Sheldon Clark, Shelby Valley, Johnson Central, Prestonsburg, East Ridge, June

Buchanan and Pike County Central. The Hornets will compete in the 57th District Boys' Basketball Tournament in February.
