Hornets limited in loss to East Ridge


LICK CREEK - Magoffin County remained in the loss column on the road in Pike County over the weekend. Host East Ridge pulled away to defeat the Hornets 70-51 in an early-season boys' high school basketball matchup on Saturday.

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 0-2.

The game served as season opener for homestanding East Ridge. 

East Ridge led at the end of each quarter. The Warriors edged the Hornets 18-15 in the opening quarter and added to their lead in the second period. East Ridge outscored Magoffin County 21-16 in the second quarter to lead 39-31 at halftime. 

Adding to its lead shortly after the intermission period, East Ridge outscored Magoffin County 16-10 in the third quarter. 

Magoffin County shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field. The Hornets were 3-of-11 from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot only 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the free throw line. 

Senior guard Brady Whitaker continued to lead the Hornets, scoring a game-high 27 points. Whitaker was the only Hornet to reach double figures in the scoring column.

Flirting with double figures, Chandler Lykins netted nine points for Magoffin County in the loss. 

Mason Lovely finished directly behind Lykins in the Hornets' scoring column and flirted with a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Randy Bailey and Grayson Whitaker rounded out the Magoffin County individual scoring, chipping in four points and three points, respectively.

Magoffin County is scheduled to meet East Ridge in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on December 28.
