Hornets less than one month away from opener
Magoffin County will look to turn up its defensive pressure during the 2019 high school football season.
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County is less than one month away from taking the field for an opener in the 2019 high school football season. First-year head coach Chris Gamble is preparing to guide the Hornets on the gridiron.
The Hornets' 2019 schedule includes games versus Knott County Central, Martin County, Breathitt County, Betsy Layne, Belfry, Lawrence County, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.
Magoffin County is slated to host Knott County Central in a season opener on August 23.
Both Magoffin County and Knott County Central opened preseason practice shortly after the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period.
Magoffin County concluded the 2018 high school football season 3-7, recording wins over East Ridge, Betsy Layne and Knott County Central. The Hornets missed out on qualifying for the 2018 Class 3A State Playoffs.
Magoffin County, under the direction of then-head coach Justin Combs, pulled away to defeat Knott County Central 26-6 when the two teams met during the 2018 season.
Knott County Central concluded the 2018 season 2-8, posting wins over much-improved Sheldon Clark and East Ridge. The Patriots dropped games to Magoffin County, Lynn Camp, Perry County Central, Shelby Valley, Breathitt County, Powell County, Morgan County and Estill County in 2018, missing out on advancing to the postseason.
Opponents outscored Knott County Central 288-153 in 2018.
Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Knott County Central football game is set for 7:30 p.m. on the Hornets' home field.
