Hornets knock off West Carter for fourth straight win


BELFRY - Magoffin County knocked off West Carter 75-63 in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on Saturday, notching its fourth straight win.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 5-3.

The Hornets led at the conclusion of each quarter. Magoffin County outscored West Carter 13-10 in each of the first two quarters to lead 26-20 at halftime.

Finishing strong, Magoffin County outscored West Carter 25-19 in the fourth quarter. 

Magoffin County shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) inside the arc. Thriving beyond the arc, Magoffin County shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 76.7 percent (23-of-30) from the free throw line. 

Aden Barnett scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Magoffin County to the victory. Barnett was 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Magoffin County featured four scorers in double figures. Isaiah Salyer scored 19 points, Grayson Whitaker contributed 12 points and Randy Bailey added 10 points as part of Magoffin County's winning effort. 

Mason Lovely and Lucas Litteral rounded out Magoffin County's individual scoring, chipping in five points and three points, respectively. 

West Carter shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field in the loss. However, West Carter shot only 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from 3-point range. 

The Comets shot 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the free throw line. 

Five of six scorers reached double figures for the Comets. Dominick Dean scored 17 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds to lead West Carter in the setback. 

Trevor Callahan (12 points), Tyson Webb (11 points), Trace Tackett (11 points) and Braden Leadingham (10 points) accompanied Dean in double figures for the Comets.
