Hornets knock off Belfry 68-54

Magoffin County freshman guard Aden Barnett made a move to goal for the Hornets during a home game versus Letcher County Central.

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County claimed its second straight win on Thursday (Jan. 16), knocking off host Belfry 68-54 in a boys' high school basketball game. 

The Hornets took control early, outscoring Belfry 21-10 in the opening quarter. Magoffin County led 36-22 at halftime and remained ahead throughout the second half, Finishing strong, Magoffin County outscored Belfry 21-16 in the fourth quarter. 

Magoffin County shot 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the field. The Hornets were 3-of-10 (30 percent) from 3-point range.Magoffin County shot 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the free throw line. 

Aden Barnett scored a game-high 26 points to lead Magoffin County to the victory. Barnett was 12-of-16 from inside the arc. 

Joining Barnett in double figures for the Hornets, Isaiah Salyer added 16 points. Salyer was 7-of-9 from the free throw line. 

Barely missing double figures for the Hornets, Randy Bailey netted nine points. 

Mason Lovely (six points), Grayson Whitaker (five points), Lucas Litteral (four points) and Patrick Damron (two points) were the Hornets' additional scorers in the winning effort.  

Belfry shot 27.9 percent (17-of-61) from the field. The Pirates were 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from 3-point range. 

Belfry shot 75 percent (15-of-20) from the free throw line. 

Sal Dean paced Belfry with a near-double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Dean was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. 

Caleb Spears (three points), Ben McNamee (two points) and Isaac Dixon (two points) accounted for the rest of the Pirates' scoring in the loss. 

Longtime 15th Region rivals, Magoffin County and Belfry met for the first time in the 2019-20 boys' high school basketball season.
