Hornets finish tied for eighth in 15th Region standings


SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County ended the 2018-19 boys' high school basketball season tied for eighth in the 15th Region standings. Both Magoffin County and Phelps compiled a 15-15 record in the 2018-19 boys' high school basketball season. 

Shelby Valley compiled the best record among 15th Region boys' basketball teams in the recently completed campaign. After falling to Johnson Central in the semifinals of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament, Shelby Valley exited the 2018-19 season with a 28-6 record. 

Perennial 15th Region title contender Johnson Central put together the second-best record in the 15th Region. Johnson Central topped Pikeville in the 2018-19 15th Region title game. The Golden Eagles finished the 2018-19 season 27-8 following a loss to Trinity in the opening round of the Boys' Sweet 16. 

The other teams ranked ahead of Magoffin County in the final 15th Region standings are runner-up Pikeville (23-9), Lawrence County (22-8), Pike County Central (18-14) and much-improved Prestonsburg (16-16). Magoffin County finished ahead of Betsy Layne (13-16), East Ridge (12-16), Sheldon Clark (10-20), Belfry (8-22), Floyd Central (6-25), Jenkins (3-27) and Piarist School (0-29) in the 15th Region boys' basketball race. 

Head coach Scott Castle guides the Hornets. The Magoffin County boys' basketball team will return to the hardwood in the offseason as it prepares for the 2019-20 season.
