Hornets falter late, drop district game to Tigers

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County owned multiple double digit leads during the second half before visiting Paintsville managed to battle back to win 61-60 in a 57th District boys' basketball game on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-3 overall and opened 0-1 in the 57th District.

Paintsville improved to 2-1 overall and opened 1-0 in the district with the win. 

Longtime 57th District rivals, Magoffin County and Paintsville swapped leads throughout the district contest. The Hornets led 48-37 at the conclusion of the third quarter. However, Paintsville finished strong, thriving late. The Tigers doubled up the Hornets 24-12 in the fourth quarter to claim the district win. 

Magoffin County shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) inside the arc. The Hornets were 4-of-13 from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the free throw line. 

Aden Barnett led the Hornets, scoring 23 points. Barnett was 7-for-12 inside the arc.

Grayson Whitaker and Randy Bailey accompanied Barnett in double figures in scoring for the Hornets, netting 10 points apiece. 

Isaiah Salyer narrowly missed reaching double figures for the Hornets, finishing with nine points. 

Magoffin County dished out nine assists and received scoring from six different players. Mason Lovely and Lucas Litteral rounded out the Hornets' individual scoring, posting five points and three points, respectively. 

Lovely led Magoffin County inside, grabbing six rebounds. 

Host Magoffin County committed only eight turnovers in the setback. 

The Hornets are scheduled to host Pike County Central on Thursday, Dec. 19. Then, Magoffin County is slated to entertain Jenkins on Friday, Dec. 20. 

The tip-off for each upcoming boys' high school basketball game featuring Magoffin County is set for 7:30 p.m.
