Hornets drop opener to Floyd Central
EASTERN - Visiting Magoffin County pushed Floyd Central for three quarters before the host team eventually pulled away to win 60-42 in a boys' high school basketball season opener on Tuesday night.
Junior guard Ethan Smith-Mills poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Floyd Central to the win.
Floyd Central fared well early, outscoring Magoffin County 11-5 in the first quarter.
But the Hornets battled back.
Magoffin County opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to move ahead 16-11.
However, Smith-Mills delivered prior to halftime, completing a three-point play in the opening half's final minute to allow the Jaguars to take a 22-19 lead into the break.
Floyd Central led 35-32 at the conclusion of the third quarter and quickly stretched its lead in the final period.
Smith-Mills was the only Floyd Central player to reach double figures in the scoring column
The Jaguars converted at the free throw line, especially late.
Senior guard Brady Whitaker paced Magoffin County, scoring a team-high 22 points. Whitaker was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column.
The Hornets were only 10 of 21 from the free throw line.
Additional scorers for Magoffin County were Isaiah Salyer (six points), Chandler Lykins (four points), Randy Bailey (four points), Aden Barnett (four points) and Mason Lovely (two points).
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit East Ridge on Saturday. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-East Ridge boys' basketball game is set for 6 p.m.
