Hornets drop district game to Johnson Central


SALYERSVILLE - Host Magoffin County faltered shortly after intermission as Johnson Central used a 24-9 run in the third quarter to pull away to win 81-61 in a 57th District boys' basketball game on Monday night. 

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 11-13 overall and 0-5 in the 57th District.

Johnson Central improved to 19-5 overall and 5-1 in the district with the win. 

Connecting on over half of its attempts, Johnson Central shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field. The Golden Eagles were 5-of-18 from 3-point range. 

Johnson Central shot 80 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line. 

Isaiah May led Johnson Central with 20 points and seven rebounds. Cory VanHoose followed, scoring 17 points and adding seven rebounds of his own for the Golden Eagles. Giving Johnson Central three scorers in double figures, John King contributed 12 points. 

Gabe Ferrell finished with seven points for the Golden Eagles while Braxton Bentley and Jacob Rice posted six points apiece. Rice also pulled down seven rebounds. 

In all, 10 different players scored for Johnson Central in the winning effort. 

Johnson Central boasted a lead at the conclusion of each quarter in the district matchup. The Golden Eagles led 33-31 at halftime. 

Brady Whitaker poured in a game-high 29 points to lead the Hornets. Accompanying Whitaker in double figures for Magoffin County, Isaiah Salyer added 12 points. 

Randy Bailey (eight points), Aden Barnett (seven points), Mason Lovely (three points) and Chandler Lykins (two points) accounted for the rest of Magoffin County's scoring. 

Both Magoffin County and Johnson Central will compete in the 57th District Boys' Basketball Tournament later in the month.
