Hornets defeat Letcher County Central, 81-71


SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County returned to the win column on Tuesday night, pulling away to defeat visiting Letcher County Central 81-71.

The Hornets landed back in the win column following back-to-back losses.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 9-7. 

Letcher County Central, a team from the neighboring 14th Region, slipped to 3-10 with the loss. 

The Hornets moved ahead early, outscoring Letcher County Central 21-16 in the first quarter. However, Letcher County Central battled back, outscoring Magoffin County 20-13 in the second quarter to lead 36-34 at halftime. 

The Cougars maintained a two-point lead at the conclusion of the third quarter. 

Still, Magoffin County wouldn't be denied a victory on its home floor. Finishing strong to secure the win, Magoffin County outscored Letcher County Central 25-13 in the final period. 

Magoffin County shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field. The Hornets were 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the free throw line. 

Balanced Magoffin County featured five scorers in double figures. 

Aden Barnett scored 22 points, dished out seven assists and pulled down five rebounds for the Hornets. 

Finishing second to Barnett in scoring for the Hornets, Isaiah Salyer provided 17 points, eight assists and three steals. 

Randy Bailey delivered a double-double for Magoffin County, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. 

Grayson Whitaker followed with 14 points and Mason Lovely posted 12 points as Magoffin County claimed the win. 

The Hornets have regular-season games remaining versus Belfry, Johnson Central, Morgan County, Paintsville, Pikeville, Floyd Central, Jenkins, Prestonsburg, East Ridge, Shelby Valley and Pike County Central.
