Hornets beat Betsy Layne 36-28


BETSY LAYNE - Magoffin County returned to the win column on Friday night, defeating host Betsy Layne 36-28 in a high school football game. 

With the win, Magoffin County evened its record to 2-2.

Betsy Layne dropped to 2-2 with the loss. 

The Hornets prevailed after dropping back-to-back games to Martin County and Breathitt County, two of the state's most improved high school football teams. 

Determined Magoffin County overcame a slow start to beat Betsy Layne.

Magoffin County amassed 427 yards of total offense. The Hornets rushed 23 times for 301 yards and four touchdowns.

Jaylon McDuffus led Magoffin County on the ground, rushing four times for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Caleb Howard followed McDuffus, rushing four times for 107 yards and one touchdown. 

Quarterback Nick Caldwell contributed in rushing and passing for the Hornets. Caldwell rushed seven times for 27 yards and one touchdown. Through the air, Caldwell completed four of seven passes for 126 yards and one touchdown while throwing one interception.

Howard led Magoffin County in receiving, reeling in four receptions for 52 yards and one touchdown.

Mason Lovely, who led the Magoffin County defensive unit with a game-high 21 tackles, hauled in five receptions for 48 yards. Contributing on the ground for the Hornets, Lovely rushed three times for 24 yards. 

Betsy Layne slipped back into the loss column after notching wins over Morgan County and East Ridge.

Much-improved Betsy Layne excelled through the air. Quarterback Chase Mims led Betsy Layne throughout the matchup, completing 13 of 22 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Dalton Hall emerged as Betsy Layne's top receiver, corralling seven catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. 

Chase Hamilton was on the receiving end of a scoring pass and passed for a touchdown for the Bobcats. 

Another Betsy Layne receiver, Brady Robinson, hauled in one touchdown pass reception.

Magoffin County returned to practice earlier in the week. The Hornets have the week of Friday, Sept 20 open.
