HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:Hornets fall behind early, lose to Belfry

BELFRY - Magoffin County faced the tough task of battling host Belfry in a Class 3A, District 8 football game in Week 6 of the 2019 high school football season. Homestanding Belfry separated itself from Magoffin County early and pulled away to defeat the Hornets 59-14 on Friday, Sept. 27.

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Class 3A, District 8. 

Belfry improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the district with the win.

The Pirates returned to the win column following back-to-back losses to Archbishop Alter (Ohio) and Pikeville. 

Ben Bentley, who has committed to Youngstown State University, led Belfry to the win. Bentley rushed six times for 163 yards and two touchdowns in the Pirates' victory over the Hornets.

Belfry, which packed a lead out of each quarter, rushed 44 times for 441 yards and six touchdowns,

Following Bentley in rushing for the Pirates, Peyton Hensley rushed 13 times for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Along with Hensley, Isaiah Birchfield, Neal Copley and Brett Coleman rushed for one touchdown apiece. 

Coleman completed two of four passes for 68 yards and a pair of touchdowns, hooking up with Brenden Rash and Daniel Oliver on scoring passes. 

Running back Jaylon McDuffus excelled offensively for the Hornets. McDuffus rushed 12 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Contributing to the Hornets' rushing attack, Caleb Howard rushed 10 times for 61 yards.

Magoffin County quarterback Lucas Litteral was limited through the air. Literal completed eight of 18 passes for 21 yards. 

Linebacker Mason Lovely continued to lead Magoffin County defensively. The state's leading tackler, Lovely registered 21 tackles, 13 of which were solo tackles.
