Four more cases in Magoffin

SALYERSVILLE – Four more COVID-19 cases were reported in Magoffin County since last week’s paper printed, with health officials making an announcement concerning a local church.
To date, 77 people have tested positive in Magoffin County, with 1,692 tests conducted, 1,616 negative, two pending, four in isolation, 71 recovered and 1 hospitalized.

On Tuesday, the Magoffin County Health Department issued a statement, announcing that anyone who attended Tip Top Church on August 30 had a possible exposure to the novel coronavirus. The health department asked those in attendance that day to quarantine until September 13 and to monitor for symptoms.

The last reported case is an 8-month-old, which was connected to a case that resulted in the health department issuing the statement on the church.

Magoffin County Public Health Director and Salyersville Mayor James “Pete” Shepherd noted that it is extremely important that everyone, especially those who were at the church that day, to be aware of wearing a mask and social distancing when in public.

Last week Governor Andy Beshear extended the statewide mask mandate for another 30 days. Per the mandate, people are required to wear a mask in public statewide. Any person who is found violating the mandate is to receive a warning for the first offense, a fine of $50 for the second offense, $75 for the third offense, and $100 for each subsequent offense.

Businesses are to deny access or services to people not complying to the regulations.

Owners, operators, or employers of a business or other public-facing entity is subject to the same fines listed above, but may also be subject to an order requiring immediate closure.

To date, three Magoffin County businesses have received warning citations, but have been compliant upon follow-up reviews.

Pikeville Medical Center now has a COVID-19 test with a 15-minute turnaround for results and health officials said Frontier Medical is working to get the 15-minute tests, as well. Right now, they recommend Frontier Medical and Hope Family Medical Center for COVID-19 tests available locally, but noted that the current turnaround time is two days at both locations. Call ahead to schedule a test and/or for more information on the testing protocols for each place.
