Football: Breaking down Magoffin County's 2020 Schedule

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County football team's 2020 schedule will feature five home games.

The Hornets are scheduled to host Martin County, Betsy Layne, Belfry, Lawrence County and Clay County during the 2020 high school football season.

As part of the same slate, Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Knott County Central, Breathitt County, Floyd Central, Pike County Central and Morgan County for additional games. 

Former district champion Magoffin County will play half of its games in October. 

Kickoff for each of Magoffin County's games in the 2020 high school football season is set for 7:30 p.m.

Here's a closer look at Magoffin County's opponents for the 2020 high school football season. 

Aug. 21 at Knott County Central: After drilling visiting Knott County Central 51-22 in a 2019 season opener, Magoffin County will visit Hindman for its first game of the upcoming campaign on August 21. The Patriots posted a 2-9 record in 2019. 

Aug. 28 Martin County: The Hornets will host Martin County for an early-season contest in late-August. Martin County defeated upset-minded Magoffin County 22-6 when the two teams met in 2019. Martin County concluded the 2019 season 7-4. 

Sept. 4 at Breathitt County: Much-improved Breathitt County managed to beat the host Hornets 55-6 in 2019. Breathitt County reached the 2019 Class 2A State Semifinals, finishing its latest campaign 13-1. 

Sept. 11 Betsy Layne: After knocking off Betsy Layne 36-28 on the road in 2019, Magoffin County is poised to host the Bobcats. Betsy Layne, under the direction of former Magoffin County head coach Scotty McCoy, compiled a 4-7 record in 2019.

Sept. 25 Belfry: Magoffin County will host reigning Class 3A state champion Belfry for a district opener in late-September. Behind its strong rushing attack, Belfry downed Magoffin County 59-14 during the 2019 season. The Pirates compiled an 11-3 record in 2019. 

Oct. 1 Lawrence County: Playing on the road in Louisa in 2019, visiting Magoffin County pushed host Lawrence County before the Bulldogs prevailed 42-28. Lawrence County exited the 2019 season 4-7. 

Oct. 9 at Floyd Central: The Hornets and Jaguars hooked up in an "Instant Classic" in Salyersville during the 2019 high school football season. When the two teams met in 2019, Floyd Central managed to edge Magoffin County 36-34 in overtime. The Jaguars finished the 2019 season 3-8. 

Oct. 16 at Pike County Central: Magoffin County will venture to Pike County Central for a late-season matchup in mid-October. Pike County Central topped the Hornets 42-6 in 2019. The Hawks ended the 2019 season 8-4.

Oct. 23 Clay County: The Hornets will host Clay County for a home finale. Clay County held on to defeat the Hornets 22-8 the in 2019 season. Showing improvement, Clay County ended the 2019 season 7-4. 

Oct. 30 at Morgan County: Chris Gamble-coached Magoffin County will visit border rival Morgan County for a regular-season finale. The Hornets pulled away to defeat the Cougars convincingly in 2019, winning 48-22. Finishing winless, Morgan County exited the 2019 season 0-10.
