Following open week, Hornets to visit Belfry


On Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Magoffin County High School football team 
supported Roane County High School (W.Va.) and the family of Alex Miler, who passed away earlier in the month.

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County is headed into its Class 3A, District 8 opener. 

The Hornets are scheduled to visit perennial state title contender Belfry for a district opener on Friday, Sept. 27.

Magoffin County is 2-2 through its first four games. The Hornets, under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Gamble, own wins over Knott County Central and Betsy Layne. Magoffin County has dropped games to Martin County and Breathitt County.

Thus far in the 2019 season, opponents have outscored the Hornets 127-99.

However, Magoffin County has show much improvement offensively. 

Through the air for Magoffin County, quarterback Nick Caldwell has completed 18 of 37 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Caldwell has thrown three interceptions but rushed for two TDs.

Mason Lovely has hauled in a team-high 13 receptions for 140 yards. Three different Magoffin County receivers have reached the endzone as Caleb Howard and Brad Standifer have hauled in one scoring reception apiece for the Hornets.

Jaylon McDuffus leads Magoffin County on the ground. McDuffus has rushed 24 times for 369 yards and two touchdowns.

Howard has rushed 21 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns for the Hornets. Ranking as Magoffin County's third-leading rusher, Fernando Irvin has rushed 23 times for 171 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively for Magoffin County, Lovely boasts a state-leading 86 tackles.

Following back-to-back losses to Martin County and Breathitt County, Magoffin County beat Betsy Layne 36-28 on Friday, Sept. 13. The Hornets were open the week of Friday, Sept. 20.  

Belfry is 2-2 after suffering back-to-back losses to Archbishop Alter (Ohio) and rival Pikeville. The Pirates opened the 2019 high school football season with wins over Southwestern and Lexington Christian. Belfry has outscored its first four opponents in the 2019 season 91-63.

Pikeville upended Belfry 22-20 on Friday, Sept. 20. 

As a team, Belfry has rushed 178 times for 1,181 yards and 12 touchdowns in four games. Peyton Hensley leads the Pirates on the ground. Hensley has rushed 60 times for 380 yards and four touchdowns.

Isaac Dixon led Belfry prior to missing the Pirates' game versus Pikeville with an injury. In Belfry's first three games, Dixon rushed 36 times for 376 yards and four touchdowns.

Ben Bentley is Belfry's third-leading rusher with 309 yards and four touchdowns via 52 carries. 

Defensively, Isaiah Birchfield leads Belfry with a team-high 31 tackles.

Magoffin County and Belfry did not meet during the 2018 high school football season. 

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Belfry football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
