Fatal scooter accident on Rt. 40

FALCON – A Magoffin man was fatally injured in a scooter vs. pickup truck accident Friday night.

According to officials, on December 6, 2019, Paul “Paul Bunyan” Blanton, 57, of Salyersville, was driving a scooter and had stopped at Handee Mart. He reportedly pulled out onto KY Rt. 40, heading west, in front of Toby Ward, who was driving a Ford F150, also heading west. The truck hit the scooter, knocking it approximately 15 to 20 yards.

When rescue crews arrived, Blanton was unresponsive. Due to the weather, he could not be flown out, so he was transported via ambulance to Paul B. Hall Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased later that night.

Police said they don’t believe speed was a factor in the wreck. The driver of the truck reported to law enforcement that he did not remember seeing lights on the scooter, but the state of the scooter after the wreck made it impossible to confirm.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the truck and no other injuries were reported.

Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy Brian Tipton, Magoffin County Rescue Squad North Magoffin Volunteer Fire Department and Lifeguard Ambulance Services responded to the accident.

Blanton's obituary can be found here.
