Dance team wins state

INEZ/FRANKFORT/SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County High School Dance Team has had a very eventful week.

On Monday, MCHS Dance Team Coach Andrea Preston told Mortimer Media Group about their big news items, starting with the first-ever 57th District Dance Championship.

“I got in contact with the coach from Martin County and I said, ‘It’s time for dance to shine,’” Preston said. “We all have teams and I said, ‘Why not have a competition?’”

They were able to get the dance championship to occur alongside the basketball district tournament, at Martin County High School, with the teams competing at the district level for the first time and Magoffin County High School Dance Team walking away with the win last week.

Over the weekend, the team traveled to Frankfort to compete at the state level in the medium division.

“There were so many good teams there from all over the state,” Preston said.

The Hornets competed in pom, jazz and prop, winning first-place in prop and jazz and third in pom.

“I feel like our biggest obstacle was jazz,” Preston said. “Jazz was so technical that it’s a really, really hard category to win in and we’ve not won in jazz in three or four years, so to be able to bring that back home, again, was amazing.”

And if that isn’t enough, two of the dance team’s seniors signed to dance at the college level this week, with Audriana Blanton committing to the University of the Cumberlands and Madison Lyon to the University of Pikeville.

“This is the first time I’ve ever got to experience this as a couch and got to go to a signing,” Preston said. “It’s a big deal. These girls are so excited and I’m so excited for them because dance doesn’t have to end at the high school level. You can go to college, get a degree and receive money to go and do something that you love. That’s what has really motivated them to work hard this year to get that scholarship.”
