CRIME DOESN'T PAY

338

On Wednesday, January 8, a woman sentenced in district court to hold a sign outside of the business she reportedly shoplifted from served her eight hours, with the sign reading, “I was caught shoplifting.”

Magoffin County District Judge Dennis Prater told the Independent, “Legislators and county officials are constantly complaining about how locking people up is a financial burden on the counties, but at the same time you have business owners and the public in general who are sick and tired of the stealing and shoplifting. Having shoplifters hold a sign is a good alternative sentence to jail. Hopefully, a little public ridicule will go a long way in curbing the theft problem.”
