FAYETTE – One man has been charged related to an ongoing homicide investigation in Magoffin County.

On June 19, 2020, Kentucky State Police Trooper Kevin Newsome responded to a call reporting that the body of 78-year-old Jerold Arnett had been found in a driveway of Terry Porter’s residence on Roanne Creek Road off of Half Mountain Road in Magoffin County.
According to the warrant, while first responders were at the scene Porter was observed near a 1989 Toyota pickup owned by Jerold Arnett, which had been found parked and abandoned on the roadway. A witness told police he/she had not seen any other individuals near Arnett’s truck during that time.

Police also received information that Porter was operating what appeared to be Arnett’s Toyota pickup in Magoffin County on the day of Arnett’s death.

While no charges have been made concerning Arnett’s death, Porter is currently facing the felony charge of theft by unlawful taking (auto), $500 or more but under $10,000.

While Porter was served with the warrant at the address associated with Eastern State Hospital in July, no court date has been scheduled in the case.

Arnett’s death has been ruled a homicide and his body was sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy. At this time, it is believed he died of an apparent gunshot wound.

The investigation, which remains open, is being led by KSP Detective Newsome. KSP has not released any further statements regarding the case since June.

The Independent will release more information as it becomes available.
