Maroon & White Night set for Friday

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County High School boys' and girls' basketball teams be featured at  the annual Maroon & White Night on Friday starting at 6 p.m..

Fans will have an opportunity to meet the Magoffin County Hornets and Lady Hornets during the preseason high school basketball event. 

Maroon & White Night will include various games and giveaways, including University of Kentucky basketball game tickets. Concessions will be available throughout the evening. 

All Magoffin County basketball players are invited to attend. The young basketball players are asked to wear their school uniform for a team picture with the 2017-18 Magoffin County basketball squad. 

Magoffin County is ranked ninth in the 15th Region heading into the 2017-18 boys' high school basketball season. 

The Hornets are ranked ahead of former district rival Lawrence County and East Ridge, who are tied for the 10th spot.

Magoffin County is projected to finish behind Belfry (8), Sheldon Clark (7), Pike County Central (6), Paintsville (5), Shelby Valley (4), Johnson Central (3), Floyd Central (2) and reigning champion and preseason favorite Pikeville (1) in the 15th Region. 

Scott Castle is set to guide the Hornets as their new head coach. Castle took over for former Magoffin County boys' basketball head coach Robbie Russell during the offseason. 

Magoffin County concluded the 2016-17 season 18-12 following a loss to South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. The Hornets finished runner-up to rival Johnson Central in the 57th District one season ago. 

Magoffin County is picked to finish 10th in the 2017-18 Preseason 15th Region Girls' Basketball Poll as voted on by coaches.

The Lady Hornets, under the direction of head coach Doug Greene, ended the 2016-17 season 9-19. Magoffin County lost to eventual 15th Region champion Paintsville in the opening round of the 57th District Girls' Basketball Tournament. The Lady Hornets missed out on advancing to the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament.  

Magoffin County is ranked behind Sheldon Clark (9), upstart Floyd Central (8), Belfry (7), East Ridge (6), Pike County Central (5), Pikeville (4), Johnson Central (3), Shelby Valley (2) and reigning champion Paintsville (1), a longtime district rival. 

Paintsville, Shelby Valley, East Ridge, Pike County Central, Pikeville, Johnson Central and Jenkins are represented in the Preseason 15th Region Girls' Basketball Player Rankings. 

The Magoffin County basketball teams are scheduled to visit Floyd Central for a season-opening boys-girls doubleheader on November 28.
