Magoffin County voted top team in 15th Region
SALYERSVILLE - The 15th Region Coaches Association has voted Magoffin County the region’s top boys’ basketball team heading into the 2016-17 season.
Voting, conducted among coaches in early-August, placed the Hornets ahead of Johnson Central (2), Sheldon Clark (3), East Ridge (4), Pikeville (5), Shelby Valley (6), defending champion Lawrence County (7), Belfry (8), South Floyd (9) and Pike County Central (10).
The region rankings were initially published in The Cats’ Pause 2016-17 Kentucky Basketball Yearbook, released earlier in the month.
Magoffin County head coach Robbie Russell, his staff and players are anxious to open the 2016-17 season.
Following an appearance in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament Semifinals in March, Magoffin County concluded the 2015-16 season 22-9. Magoffin County returns all five starters from the 2015-16 season, including its top two scorers - senior guards Trenton Russell (6-4) and Jaren Lovely (6-1).
One of the state’s top boys’ high school basketball players, Russell averaged 23.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the Hornets during the 2015-16 season.
Lovely ranked second in scoring for the Hornets and led the Magoffin County boys’ basketball team in assists. He averaged 17.3 points and 5.1 assists per game for the Hornets.
Other experienced players back for Magoffin County are senior center Dalton Peters, junior forward/center Ryan Mullins and freshman guard Brady Whitaker.
Russell is also expecting senior Kyle Risner (6-0) and juniors Dylan Arnett (6-1) and Nolan Arnett (6-2) to make strong contributions for the Hornets.
Magoffin County is scheduled to tip off the 2016-17 season at home in a game against 15th Region rival South Floyd on Nov. 29.
