Lady Hornets stumble at Pike County Central
BUCKLEYS CREEK - Magoffin County scored first but couldn't maintain a lead on the road at Pike County Central in an early-season high school softball matchup. Host Pike County Central held Magoffin County scoreless in six straight innings to win 7-2 on Friday.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-1.
Pike County Central evened its record to 1-1 with the win.
Magoffin County pitcher Holly Handshoe took the loss. Handshoe pitched 4.1 innings for the Lady Hornets, allowing seven runs, four of which were earned.
Starting strong, Magoffin County plated two runs in the top half of the first inning and owned a lead for more than half of the game.
Pike County Central cut Magoffin County's lead in half during the home portion of the second inning but still faced a one-run deficit.
The Lady Hawks used one big inning to distance themselves from the Lady Hornets. Pike County Central scored six runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to move ahead 7-2.
The Lady Hawks plated seven runs via eight hits.
Pike County Central was flawless in the field, turning in an error-free performance.
Magoffin County was limited to four hits. Erin Bolen led Magoffin County at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run.
Jordyn Blair and Morgan Wilson added one hit apiece for the Lady Hornets in the setback.
Multiple defensive miscues hurt the Lady Hornets. Magoffin County committed three errors in the field.
Familiar foes, Magoffin County and Pike County Central are slated to meet again in less than two weeks. The Lady Hornets are slated to host Pike County Central on April 5.
