Lady Hornets slated to visit Breathitt County
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Breathitt County for a high school softball season opener on Thursday.
A familiar foe for the Lady Hornets, Breathitt County is a member of the neighboring 14th Region.
Magoffin County was ranked seventh in the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association Preseason 15th Region Top 10 Poll. Defending champion Pikeville occupied the number one spot in the preseason poll while longtime powerhouse Johnson Central was ranked second.
Lawrence County, Belfry, Paintsville and Pike County Central were in the other positions in front of the Lady Hornets. Magoffin County was ranked ahead of Floyd Central, East Ridge and Shelby Valley in the Preseason 15th Region Top 10 Poll.
Under the direction of head coach Tony Skaggs, former 15th Region champion Magoffin County ended the 2017 season 11-13. The Lady Hornets finished runner-up to longtime rival Johnson Central in the 57th District. Magoffin County lost to eventual champion Pikeville in the opening round of the 2017 15th Region Softball Tournament.
Breathitt County was ranked seventh in the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association Preseason 14th Region Poll. The Lady Cats concluded the 2017 season 10-23 following a heartbreaking loss to rival Jackson City in the opening round of the 55th District Softball Tournament.
Breathitt County dropped its season opener earlier in the week as visiting Perry County Central, one of the top softball teams in the 14th Region, pulled away to win 16-1 in four innings.
The Lady Cats are under the direction of head coach Becky Neace.
First pitch for the Magoffin County-Breathitt County softball game is set for 6 p.m. in Jackson.
