Hornets to return to Mountain Schoolboy Classic
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County will once again compete in one of the area's top holiday boys' high school basketball tournaments. The Hornets are slated to venture to Pike County to play in the Belfry-hosted Mountain Schoolboy Classic in late-December.
Magoffin County finalized and released its 2018-19 boys' basketball schedule earlier in the schoolyear. The Hornets are due to face 15th Region rival Phelps in the opening round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic on December 27.
Magoffin County finished 2-1 in the 2017 Mountain Schoolboy Classic, posting back-to-back wins over 15th Region rivals East Ridge and Phelps following a loss to 14th Region title contender Perry County Central.
The Hornets are ranked seventh in the 15th Region Basketball Coaches Association Preseason Top 10 Boys' Basketball Poll.
Over the summer, Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach Scott Castle, notched wins over Pike County Central, Floyd Central, Prestonsburg, Paintsville, Sheldon Clark and multiple teams from West Virginia and Virginia.
The Hornets ended the 2017-18 season 9-20, claiming a win over eventual 57th District champion and 15th Region runner-up Johnson Central.
Senior guard Brady Whitaker is the top player back for the Hornets. Whitaker led Magoffin County in scoring throughout the 2017-18 season and ranked as one of the area's top boys' high school basketball players.
The Hornets opened preseason practice in mid-October. Magoffin County is slated to tip off the 2018-19 season on the road at Floyd Central on November 27.
