Hornets knock off Knott County Central: Russell earns player of the game honor
HAZARD - After claiming three consecutive wins in the Belfry-hosted Mountain Schoolboy Classic, preseason 15th Region favorite Magoffin County posted a win in another tournament on Tuesday night, topping perennial 14th Region title contender Knott County Central 68-63 in the tradition-rich WYMT Mountain Classic at Perry County Central.
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 10-4.
Knott County Central dropped to 9-4 with the loss.
Magoffin County notched its first win in the WYMT tournament since 2001.
Magoffin County senior guard Trenton Russell scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Hornets to the win. Russell was named the player of the game.
The Hornets made the most of a balanced offensive attack. Joining Russell in double figures for Magoffin County were Jaren Lovely, Ryan Mullins and Dylan Arnett.
Lovely added 16 points and three rebounds for the Hornets in the win.
Directly behind Lovely in the Magoffin County scoring column with a double-double, Ryan Mullins scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
In another solid performance, Dylan Arnett tossed in 14 points and chased down two rebounds for the Hornets.
Also contributing for Magoffin County in the win were Dalton Peters (two points, two rebounds) and Kyle Risner (two rebounds).
"This is a great team win, we played hard all night," Magoffin County Coach Robbie Russell commented following his team's victory. "I'm so proud of my players and how they stepped up and played. It's a big win for us."
Austin Combs paced Knott County Central, scoring 17 points in the short effort.
Magoffin County will face host Perry County Central in the semifinals of the WYMT Mountain Classic on Friday evening. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-Perry County Central game is set for 6:30 p.m. on the Commodores' home court.
