Hornets headed back to Mountain Schoolboy Classic

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County will once again compete in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry. The 2016 edition of the Belfry-hosted holiday tournament is slated for Dec. 28-30.

The tradition-rich Mountain Schoolboy Classic will feature boys’ basketball programs from multiple regions.

Magoffin County concluded the 2015-16 season 22-9. The Hornets reached the semifinals of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Magoffin County is set to return all five starters from the 2015-16 season, including its top two scorers.

Senior guard Trenton Russell (6-4), one of the state’s top boys’ high school basketball players, led the Hornets in scoring during the 2015-16 season. Russell averaged 23.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for Magoffin County as a junior.

Fellow senior guard Jaren Lovely (6-1) averaged 17.3 points and 5.1 assists per game for the Hornets.

The other starters returning for the Hornets are senior center Dalton Peters (6-3, 4 ppg, 4 rpg), junior forward/center Ryan Mullins (5 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and freshman guard Brady Whitaker (5-9, 8.0 ppg, 2.1 rpg).

Magoffin County Coach Robbie Russell also expects senior Kyle Risner (6-0) and juniors Dylan Arnett (6-1) and Nolan Arnett (6-2) to contribute throughout the 2016-17 season.

The Hornets are scheduled to host 15th Region rival South Floyd for a season opener on Nov. 29. Former 15th Region champion South Floyd is poised to take the floor for its final season before consolidating with Allen Central to form Floyd County Central.
