Hornets falter late, drop district game to Johnson Central

PAINTSVILLE - Magoffin County faltered late as host Johnson Central used a strong fourth quarter performance to pull away to win 83-56 in a 57th District boys' basketball game on Saturday night. 

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 4-15 overall and 0-3 in the 57th District. 

Johnson Central improved to 10-9 overall and 2-0 in the district with the win.

Homestanding Johnson Central shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the field. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from 3-point range. 

Johnson Central shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the free throw line. 

Thriving around the goal, Johnson Central outrebounded Magoffin County 45-30. 

Johnson Central edged the Hornets 18-15 in the opening quarter and led 36-29 at halftime. However, Magoffin County was still within striking distance heading into the fourth quarter. But Johnson Central finished strong, outscoring the Hornets 29-11 in the game's final frame to win handily.  

Freshman Cory VanHoose led Johnson Central with a game-high 23 points. Johnson Central's offensive effort included four scorers in double figures. 

Isaiah May scored 16 points while Gabe Ferral and Jacob Rice added 15 points apiece for the Golden Eagles. Rice recorded a double-double, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds for the host team. 

Other scorers for Johnson Central were Kamen Slone (six points), Ryan Sartin-Slone (four points), Bryson Hackney (three points) and Braxton Bentley (one point). 

Isaiah Salyer paced Magoffin County with 19 points. Salyer drained five 3-point field goals in the district contest. 

Brady Whitaker finished directly behind Salyer in the Magoffin County scoring column and delivered a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. 

Magoffin County shot 42.2 percent (19-of-45) from the field. The Hornets were 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the free throw line. 

Other scorers for Magoffin County were Dylan Arnett (four points), Michael Conley (four points), Chandler Lykins (four points), Nolan Arnett (two points), Mason Lovely (two points), Kirklen Wireman (two points), Nolan Arnett (two points), Mason Lovely (two points) and Logan Lovely (one point). 

Both Magoffin County and Johnson Central will compete in the 57th District Boys' Basketball Tournament in February.
