HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Skaggs honored as Class A Player of the Year
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County senior Hannah Skaggs is the Class A Player of the Year.
The Kentucky Softball Coaches Association (KSCA) named Skaggs the Class A Player of the Year after she helped lead the Lady Hornets to a 25-5 record in the 2016 season.
One of the state’s top high school softball pitchers, Skaggs was 14-2 with two saves and an 0.62 ERA during her senior campaign.
Skaggs registered 181 strikeouts, allowing only one home run. The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) signee also pitched 14 complete games, eight of which were shutouts.
Skaggs produced at the plate, too. She batted .450 with 36 hits, 38 RBIs, two doubles, one triple and five home runs in 27 games.
Jazzy Howard accompanied Skaggs as a First Team All-State selection. Laylee Burchell was named Second Team All-State.
Magoffin County finished runner-up to longtime rival Johnson Central in both the 57th District and the 15th Region. Johnson Central edged the Lady Hornets 3-2 in nine innings in the 15th Region championship game on June 2.
Players from each of the state’s 16 regions earned honors from the KSCA.
Holy Cross of Louisville was named the Class A Coaching Staff of the Year.
Other players of the year were Montana Fouts (East Carter) in Class 2A and Kaylee Tow (Madisonville-North Hopkins) in Class 3A.
