HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Lady Hornets oust Sheldon Clark from district tournament
PAINTSVILLE - Magoffin County defeated Sheldon Clark 6-4 in the first round of the 57th District Softball Tournament at Johnson Central on Monday, May 22.
With the victory, Magoffin County advanced to meet tournament host Johnson Central in the 57th District championship game.
In the other opening round game in the 57th District Softball Tournament, Johnson Central blanked crosstown rival Paintsville 10-0 in five innings to win via the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Mercy Rule.
Both Magoffin County and Johnson Central qualified for the 15th Region Softball Tournament.
Magoffin County pitcher Mahallie Ratliff earned the win. Ratliff allowed only four hits while registering eight strikeouts.
The Lady Hornets outhit Sheldon Clark 7-4. Magoffin County made the most of its offensive opportunities throughout the postseason high school softball tournament.
Samantha Black, Kennedi Stacy and Alexis Montgomery led Magoffin County at the plate, delivering two hits apiece. Stacy and Montgomery each had two RBIs for the Lady Hornets.
The game's most productive hitter, Stacy drilled a double and legged out a triple in Magoffin County's triumph.
Montgomery and Morgan Wilson added one double apiece for the Lady Hornets in the hard-fought win.
Sheldon Clark ended its season 12-11 as a result of the loss.
