HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Magoffin County to visit West Carter for season finale
SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County will conclude its 2016 season on the road at West Carter in a non-district high school football game on Friday night (Oct. 28). An opponent from Class 3A, District 5, West Carter is 5-4 and headed to the Class 3A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.
West Carter owns wins over Powell County, East Carter, Bath County, Pendleton County and Lewis County. The Comets have dropped games to Raceland, Nicholas County, Russell and Fleming County. West Carter has managed to outscore opponents 229-135.
During its latest game, played Friday, Oct. 21, West Carter upended host Lewis County 31-9 in Vanceburg to notch a Class 3A, District 5 win.
Peyton Brown leads West Carter in rushing. Brown has rushed 120 times for 732 yards and 15 touchdowns,.
West Carter features a dual-threat quarterback in Ethan Brown. A longtime leader for the Comets, Ethan Brown has completed 54-of-112 passes for 730 yards and six touchdowns, but has thrown eight interceptions. On the ground, Ethan Brown has rushed 127 times for 543 yards and seven touchdowns.
Defensively, West Carter features Shelton Kouns, a talented player who has registered 104 tackles.
Magoffin County is 2-7 overall. The Hornets have posted wins over Betsy Layne and Morgan County. Magoffin County has dropped games to Leslie County, Estill County, Shelby Valley, Pike County Central, Knott County Central, Breathitt County and Powell County.
Opponents have outscored Magoffin County 359-208. The Hornets, however, have managed to score 30 of more points in five of their nine games.
Justin Combs is nearing the end of his first season as Magoffin County’s head coach. Combs took over the Hornet gridiron program shortly before the start of the current campaign, replacing Scotty McCoy.
Magoffin County honored its seniors during the home campaign versus Powell County last week. Those seniors will have an opportunity to take the field for the Magoffin County football program one last time on the road in Carter County.
Kickoff for the Magoffin County-West Carter football game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Olive Hill.
