HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Hornets to resume practice July 11
SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Hornets will return to the gridiron in less than two weeks, resuming practice on July 11 at 9 a.m. Currently, Magoffin County football players and coaches are enjoying a break via the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Dead Period.
High school athletes and teams from across state are sidelined via the KHSAA’s mandatory dead period. All prep football squads will begin official preseason practice some time in July.
The Hornets finished the 2015 season 2-8, falling short of qualifying for the Class 3A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.
Magoffin County blanked Betsy Layne 42-0 and defeated Knott County Central 54-35 for its two wins in the 2015 season.
The Hornets, however, dropped games to Leslie County, Estill County, Shelby Valley, Morgan County, Pike County Central, Breathitt County, Powell County and West Carter during the 2015 campaign.
Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 7, along with former multi-time state champion Breathitt County, Estill County, Morgan County, Powell County and Knott County Central.
The Hornets, under the direction of head coach Scott McCoy, went to work early in the latest offseason.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Class 2A, District 8 frontrunner Leslie County in a season-opener on Aug. 19. Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Leslie County football game is set for 7:30 p.m. here in Salyersville.
