HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Hornets to host East Carter in season opener

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County will kick off its 2017 football season at home versus East Carter on August 18. The Hornets and Raiders did not meet during the 2016 season. However, Magoffin County and East Carter are no strangers on the gridiron.

The Hornets are under the direction of second-year head coach Justin Combs. Magoffin County compiled a 2-8 record during the 2016 season, notching wins over Betsy Layne and Morgan County before missing out on reaching the Class 3A State Playoffs. The Hornets suffered losses to Leslie County, Estill County, Shelby Valley, Pike County Central, Knott County Central, Breathitt County, Powell County and West Carter in the 2016 season.

Magoffin County finalized and released its 2017 football schedule earlier in the year. In addition to East Carter, Magoffin County will host Harlan, Knott County Central, Estill County and Breathitt County.

The Hornets will visit Lawrence County, East Ridge, Betsy Layne, Powell County and Morgan County during the upcoming campaign.

Throughout the offseason, Magoffin County players have worked hard in preparation for the 2017 season.

Currently, Magoffin County football players are headed into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Dead Period. The Hornets will begin preseason practice in July.
